Hello friends and welcome to the 21st annual Telefest — a celebration of good friends, good food and great skiing! Telefest is sponsored by K2, Black Diamond, Patagonia, G3, Mountain Hardwear, Namaste, Volie, Garmont, Rossignol, Osprey, 22 Designs, Scarpa, Telemark Magazine and Flylow.

Was the snow last year awesome or what! Hopefully this year there will be more of the soft stuff and more fun. We made some more changes for this year, so Telefest will be better than ever. Now in its 21st season, Telefest has evolved into a tradition and is a hallmark celebration of the telemark turn.

During Telefest there will be opportunities to try out the latest tele gear, take an instructional course or clinic, compete in races, cut turns in the backcountry, watch a movie, and dance with friends at the pasty party!

As always, we have tried to enhance this event in hopes that you will all come and enjoy the beautiful skiing in the Upper Peninsula, and become part of our growing group of friends. From first-time skiers to the seasoned veteran, all will have a great time! Go off the backside and hunt down the powder, then come back in and enjoy the fire, eat pasty’s and celebrate!

SISU Ski Fest organizing committee is pleased to announce its 42K marathon is now a qualifier for Hayward, Wisconsin’s legendary American Birkebeiner®. The significance of this recognition will draw more racers to the early season race to be held in Ironwood, MI this January 15, 2011. Racers can compete to get their qualifying time for wave placement in the Birkebeiner®, which will be cutting off registrations this year at 8,400 skiers. The SISU Ski Fest’s Heiki Lunta Half Marathon is also a Kortelopet Qualifier.

Also some course changes have been a focus for ABR Ski Trails owner Eric Anderson. “The start of the 42K is revised to be wider for a more friendly start. Basically the first 5K is up to 50 ft wide and no major climbs or descents. The first major climb is at about 5.5K, according to Eric.” Anderson also stated that they have eliminated 2 of the climbs and 2 of the descents from one of the more difficult loops. Other course improvements include the 21K has a very wide start and no major climbs until 3K. Both races have more spectator viewing areas for the first 1/2 K. The race start times are more spread out so the participants should not have difficulty passing other racers.

The Taste n Tour, sponsored by ABR, is a unique 10K tour is meant for people that want to get out on the SISU trail, participate in the festivities, but aren’t concerned about being timed. Completion by 5:00 p.m. and eating is the major goal for these participants. Taste n Tour is pleased to offer four delectable food stations including a dessert station. SISU committee members expect these registration numbers to climb over last year’s 100 participants. Thirteen restaurants are now sponsoring this event. They include Breakwater, The Pines, Brewster’s, Elk N Hound, Manny’s, Maplewood Steakhouse, Golden Dragon, Old Suffolk Ale House, Steep Creek Café, The Pastry Kitchen, Rigoni’s Bakery and moijakka for the marathon and half marathon participants is being supplied by Ben’s Place.

The race course will be shortened by one block, ending by the Ben Franklin store on Aurora Street. This will allow Suffolk Street to remain open and traffic to flow through the downtown. Strategic planning has been completed with signage and road closings to accommodate business owners. The alley ways downtown will remain open and parking will be available to consumers.

The NEW event this year is the Lapset Loppet (children’s race) sponsored by River Valley Bank. It will be held on Friday January 14 at ABR Ski Trails. Free 2K and 5K events will be start at 1:00 in the afternoon. The 2K is not timed for speed but is a fun event for the younger children, whereas the 5K is a timed event for the more competitive racers. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served and all participants will receive a finisher’s medallion.

Orvana Minerals Corp has come on board to sponsor the Heikki Lunta Half Marathon, and SISU is still searching for a sponsor for the full marathon. Visit our website listed below for details on becoming a sponsor.

Visit www.sisuskifest.com for more information or to register to become a volunteer. The first volunteer meeting will be held December 7 at 6:00pm at the Ironwood Memorial Building. If you are interested in having a booth at our event expo Friday and Saturday January 14-15, please contact Dona Coggins, expo coordinator at 906-663-4233.

Big Powderhorn Mountain (under new ownership) is planning to open for the 2009 - 2010 season on December 11, 2009.

2009-10 UPDATE

We are pleased to announce that Big Powderhorn Mountain is under new ownership!! But don’t worry, the same great skiing and boarding and more of the same friendly and helpful staff will be here to greet you and your family this season. In fact, most of the same faces you have have come to expect to see when you visit us will be here to greet you again this season. The new owners and managers are passionate skiers and boarders; folks who have been visiting and enjoying the slopes of Big Powderhorn for many years. In fact, some have been skiing here since the resort opened for the 1963/64 season! While you are sure to see changes around the resort, you can count on the same strong standards and family fun atmosphere and staff that has made Powderhorn a midwest family favorite resort.

NO RATE INCREASE:

It is already tough enough to take a family on a well deserved vacation, it ought not to cost more! So we have held our weekend and holiday rates at last season’s price and LOWERED our midweek rates! Call Big Powderhorn Lodging for great midweek lodging value and you will have a vacation that is affordable and fun! Contact lodging at 800-222-3131.

Racing:

Last year we invested in some new wireless timing gear and let our snowsports instructors experiment with some fun races in various locations around the hill. This year we are bringing regularly scheduled racing back to Big Powderhorn. Sundays will be the day to look for a chance to race and for a modest fee you can race against the clock, a friend or your whole family. Most of the time the course will be set on Dynamite Trail but we will also be mixing it up with other locations around the mountain to keep it interesting and test your ability to adapt to different terrain. If you have a group that would like to race on a different day or have your own private race, give our Snowsports School a call and see what they can do for you.

Terrain Parks:

Last year we added some rails and fun boxes to our parks. This year we are fine tuning our system and adding a couple new items. Our park design team will be setting up Oxbow Park to have a good mix of features in the beginner to intermediate range and Powderkeg Park will be geared more for intermediate to advanced riders. Even though Oxbow is geared to be a bit less challenging, it does have a couple of the biggest rails in the Midwest if not the country. Our straight rail is over 115 feet long and the rainbow is an arch that is over 65 feet long and can reach over 7 feet above the snow depending on the amount of snow we have and how it’s groomed.

Children Ski Free:

With every adult lift ticket purchased, you can get a child’s (9 & under) lift ticket for free! The child’s ticket must be requested at the time of the adult ticket purchase and it must be for the same number of days and the same dates. The savings from this deal can save more than enough money to pay for the gas for the entire trip!

Wine Huts:

Big Powderhorn now offers three cozy trailside huts for your private lunches or get-togethers on the mountain during your ski day. We provide the fire, grill, charcoal, and staff to transport your food to the huts for a very nominal fee ($20). Call ahead to reserve your hut or to get more details on this popular option.

The fall has been really pretty. Colors are in full/post peak. September/October have been the months to take care of any last minute trail changes, get the firewood, get rid of dead fallen trees on the trail and mow the trails low for the October snows that often fall here in Big Snow Country. We are now ready for the white stuff!

Well-known for its collection of downhill ski resorts, the Big Snow Country of the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan is also home to some of the most challenging and most scenic cross country ski trails in the midwest.

Every winter a succession of snowstorms blows in over the waters of Lake Superior and turns the rugged terrain and old growth forests of the region into a pristine and spectacular white landscape. Here in the Western U.P. the blessings of winter are bestowed upon the cross country skier with a great and wonderful abundance.

“The secret to our popularity is that we get a lot of snow and we get a lot of snow early,” says Eric Anderson, owner of ABR Trails in Ironwood. “We attract a lot of competitive skiers early in the year who use our trails to train for the race season later in the winter.”

The professionally groomed trails of ABR Trails generally open in November - with the season starting some years as early as the last couple of weeks of October.

ABR Trails - Ironwood, MI

ABR Trails offers 60 km of trails groomed for skating and tracked for classic cross country skiing with the latest, and most advanced grooming equipment available. The trails - winding through a varied terrain along the Montreal River - can be enjoyed by everyone - from beginners to recreational skiers to competitive ski racers.

The facilities at ABR Trails include a full-service ski shop with skis, bindings, poles, waxes, clothing, etc. for sale and rental skis available for those who need them. ABR also has a heated warming cabin with light concessions, change rooms, indoor restrooms, and a large heated wax area with many wax benches. There is additional room for tables and chairs available for teams or groups to use. Lodging is available on site at two rental vacation homes - The Hilltop House and the River Houses - as well as three rustic cabins along the trails.

Trail fees at ABR Trails are $12 for adults and $6 for children ten or under.

The Wolverine Nordic Ski Club is located east of Ironwood Michigan just north of US Highway 2. The trail may be accessed through several different trailhead locations. The main lodge and warming building is located off of Section-12 Road (North of the new WalMart). The hospital trailhead is located behind Grand View Hospital. Skiers may also access the trail system from Big Powderhorn Mountain by purchasing a one ride lift pass.

The Wolverine Nordic Ski Club trail system consists of five different loops that provide 24 kilometers of skiing for both striders and skaters. The Club operates on a donation basis and the donation boxes are located at all major trailheads and our chalet.

The cross country ski experience at the Porcupine Mountains State Park can be as wild as you want to make it. The groomed trails that wrap around the downhill ski area at “The Porkies” offer a range of terrain from gentle stretches for the beginner to trails for the more advanced skier. The 42 km of cross country trails are groomed and tracked for the classic skier.

Trails are track set with a power-tiller equipped groomer. Warming huts are located along the Log Camp Loop and Union Spring Trails. Winter interpretive activities include guided snowshoe hike and lantern light skiing.
Would you like a true winter wilderness experience? Try spending a winter night or two (or more) in the Porcupine Mountains in a yurt. Yurts are sturdy, tent-like structures, that originated in central Asia.
It’s Still Summer But We’re Getting Ready…
We hope your enjoying a great summer! It seems to be flying by way too fast. We’re starting to do some of the “get ready for winter jobs” around here now. The trails are being mowed and we did some work moving the big rails in Oxbow Park. Last year the park was a bit random so this year we are trying to make three distinct lines with the features so you can get more hits out of a run. We’re also moving the starting ramp back farther to make more room. The goal is to better utilize the natural terrain with the features, make it so we can get the park open faster with less snowmaking, and have a better park. Thanks to those of you who wrote-in with ideas on how to improve the parks. We’ll keep working to make them better.
